As Rollei became some sort of my exclusive film brand for black & white photography I decided to give the Rollei Retro 80s a try. Overhelmingly happy with the Rollei Infrared 400, I am looking for some fine grain slower speed film, still capable to offer an extended redscale range for some infrared filters. Having this on mind, the specifications of the Retro 80s sound promising. The film is based on the Agfa Aviphot Pan 80, produced by Agfa in Mortsel, Belgium.

Rollei’s Retro 80S is a slow-speed panchromatic black and white negative film with extended near-infrared sensitivity to 750nm. This not only helps to smooth skin tones and blemishes – making it ideal for portraits. It also means that it offers the same flexibility which I like about the Rollei Infrared 400: Loading one film to a camera, I can spontaneously decide to apply an IR filter and switch from common black & white to infrared photography. Exactly what I need, this time with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° and  a more fine grain structure than the Infrared 400.

Can’t wait to shoot some rolls. Will come up with more details after shooting some rolls in natural and studio light environments.

For now I’m just about to forget the -6°C outside, loading my Nikon FE2 and going for a cold winter walk. Hurray!
